Epson adds white ink capability to its range of digital label presses with SurePress L4033AW

November 2012

Sydney 20 November 2012: Epson has expanded its range of digital label presses with the SurePress L-4033AW, a seven-colour inkjet digital label press with white ink that makes high-quality, short-run label printing easier and more efficient, even on clear and metallic substrates.

The SurePress L-4033AW builds on the success of the SurePress L-4033A by adding white ink to Epson’s AQ ink set, producing exceptional print quality and accurate colour reproduction on a wide variety of substrates without pre-coating or treatment.

"The wide colour gamut available with the L-4033AW and seven colour AQ ink set ensures customers can produce not only solid, opaque white printing but also precise colour matching and accurate reproduction of spot and specialty colours to meet a client’s precise needs,” said Craig Heckenberg, Epson’s Business Unit Manager.

The attractive price vs performance balance of Epson’s highly versatile short run digital label SurePress range is benefiting label converters, large scale product manufacturers and commercial printers around the world, with SurePress-printed label volumes rising quickly everywhere.

“With several SurePress installations underway in the region driven by the increasing demand for high-quality customised shorter run label production, the response to SurePress’s capabilities and benefits has been very strong,” said Craig.

“In the UK there were installations soon after the worldwide launch, and Superfast Labels in Kent has lived up to its name by rolling out its 6 millionth SurePress label six months after the company installed the UK’s first SurePress,” said Craig.

Superfast Labels (www.superfast-labels.co.uk) considers itself the fastest label printer in the UK offering high-quality, self-adhesive printed labels with an incredibly fast turnaround time – often in 24 hours. The company makes more than 100,000,000 labels of over 2000 different sizes a year for customers across Europe.

“In its first six months the SurePress L-4033A completed almost 1,000 jobs, with average run length a shade under 10,000 labels per job. The press is already at 70 per cent utilisation, another milestone reached earlier than we expected,” said Andrew Miller, Managing Director at Superfast Labels.

Superfast Labels chose the Epson SurePress to add high quality affordable inkjet printing capabilities alongside four Nilpeter flexo presses.

Admark Visual Imaging, one of Australasia’s leading manufacturers of printed graphics, installed the first Epson SurePress in the Australasian region at its main production centre in Hamilton NZ.

“The main challenge we faced was in identifying a digital label print solution that would give us – and our customers – top quality output,” Admark Managing Director Laurie Pilling said.

Laurie said the first time he saw the results from an Epson digital label press he was immediately drawn to the quality of the print and that, along with the knowledge that Epson’s research and development into inkjet print heads was leading the field, told him that Epson had the best solution.

“The quality of print and colour from the SurePress is such that we can now spread heavy workloads across flexo and the SurePress without any discernible difference,” Laurie said.

Designed for label converters taking the first steps into digital printing or expanding their existing digital printing capacity, large scale product manufacturers and commercial printers, the Epson SurePress L-4033A and L-4033AW fit easily into existing digital workflows and are offered with a range of third party pre-and post-press options that can be tailored to meet various needs and budgets.

SurePress leverages the accuracy and precision of Epson’s leading MicroPiezo® ink jet technology and specially-developed SurePress AQ industrial-quality, water-based pigment ink that produces a remarkable range of colours for greater Pantone and Spot colour reproduction, including solid white.

Features of the EPSON SurePress L 4033A and L-4033AW include:

Optional Variable Data Printing: The L-4033AW offers maximum label customisation, providing customers with the flexibility to serialise labels while printing on a variety of label substrates without stopping or slowing down the printing process. In addition, text, graphics and images can be customised for each individual label in the same run for increased versatility.

High Quality Labels: Epson's acclaimed MicroPiezo ink jet technology with variable-size droplets as small as three picolitres provides ultra-precise drop formation and placement to deliver smooth gradations, remarkable colour quality and sharp detail for easy bar code readability, plus crisp small type and line work.

Industrial Quality Inks: Seven-colour on the L-4033AW (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, Orange, Green and White), durable, water-based, resin-coated pigment inks provide superior adhesion and reproduce a wide range of colours.

Versatile Substrate Support: Prints on a range of standard, off-the-shelf materials including gloss, semi-gloss, matte, film and clear and metallic substrates.

Variable Web Width: Supports rolls from 80 to 330.2 mm (3.15 to 13 inches) wide.

Enhanced Productivity: Time-consuming, short-run jobs can be transferred to SurePress for more flexibility and timely results producing thousands of labels per hour.

Less Waste: No chemicals or plates are required in the pre-press process and less substrate and ink is used in make-ready for short-run jobs.

Epson SurePress L-4033AW is available from Aldus Engineering (Australia) and Aarque Group (New Zealand).
