In yet another world first for Epson, the Epson Epson Perfection V500 Photo is the first release of a CCD (Charge–Coupled Device) scanner using LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology. In stark contrast to traditional scanners that use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) as the light source, the Epson Perfection V500 Photo's LED technology is:
- Environmentally low–impact — LEDs use no mercury, which is an element in CCFL
- Energy–efficient — up to 50 per cent less power used than with earlier models
- Incredibly quick — within one second from switching on, the scanner is ready to start scanning
- More reliable — with less heat generated than CCFL, LEDs result in less physical stress to the scanner.
